Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch
Soldier and Sailor Memorial Arch was created in 1885 by New York sculptors Samuel Kitson, Casper Buberl, and Albert W. Entress, and then later dedicated on September 17, 1886. This historical structure was created to show the story of the American Civil War.The arch features the terra cotta friezes on the northern entrance. A female figure with open arms to welcome home the 4,000 Hartford citizens who served and died for the Union on the southern entrance.
It also shows life-size figures at the base of each tower, and two angles, one holding symbols of pride and the other blowing two trumpets of hope. It is the first permanent triumphal arch constructed in the U.S. Arch structure is similar to the Arc de Triomphe in France.
